TOC Measurement – CMS-P System

Glossary of ETL Verfahrenstechnik GmbH

Total Organic Carbon (TOC) – Total Organic Carbon

Total Organic Carbon, or TOC for short, is a summary parameter that indicates the amount of organic carbon in a water or wastewater sample. It serves as a measure of organic compounds in water, which can be present either in dissolved form or as undissolved, suspended particles. Such organic substances may occur naturally in water, originating from plants and animals, or be introduced through various processes, including synthetic organic compounds.

In the monitoring and control of water flows, especially in water and wastewater treatment, TOC has proven to be an extremely useful indicator. It helps ensure compliance with regulatory limits, monitors the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants, and enables early detection of leaks and quick responses to changes.

A key element for accurate and reliable TOC measurement is an appropriate filtrate. The CMS-P filtration system has been specifically designed for this purpose. It is ideally suited for filtering liquids with medium to high levels of contamination, such as surface water, industrial water, and cooling water.

The CMS-P system offers a wide range of filter fineness levels, making it easy to adapt to the specific contamination level of the water. An integrated automatic compressed air backflushing system ensures that the metal mesh is regularly cleaned and the membrane pores are cleared of dirt and impurities. The frequency of these cleaning cycles can be programmed as needed. For applications in demanding conditions, the system cabinet and filtrate lines can be heated. Another advantage of the system is its quick-release mechanism, allowing for easy manual maintenance and rapid replacement of the filter probe with selectable separation limits ranging from 5 µm to 200 µm.

Summary

ETL Verfahrenstechnik GmbH sets new standards in sample filtration for routine TOC measurements with its CMS-P system. The system is specifically designed to meet the needs of wastewater treatment plants and excels in filtering liquids with medium to high levels of contamination, such as surface water. The filtrate required for TOC measurements is reliably filtered through a high-quality metal mesh with sizes ranging from 5 µm to 200 µm. It reliably supplies any measurement system on the market with the necessary quantity and quality of filtrate. To ensure system longevity and protect measuring devices from contamination by impurities, a programmable automatic compressed air backflushing system is integrated. This advanced feature keeps the metal probe clean and ensures consistently optimal filtration performance.

A standout feature in terms of functionality and maintenance is the built-in quick-release mechanism. This allows for straightforward maintenance and swift replacement of the filter probe with separation limits between 5 µm and 200 µm.

The CMS-P system is a compact, efficient, and low-maintenance solution for sample filtration in wastewater treatment plants in the context of TOC measurement. By combining metal mesh with automatic compressed air backflushing, the system ensures that water samples are consistently delivered in the highest quality and quantity.
