PMC-R system – backflush filter with ceramic technology
Glossary of ETL Verfahrenstechnik GmbH
The PMC-R system is designed for the efficient filtration of liquids, particularly heavily contaminated wastewater. It is ideally suited for use in various stages of wastewater treatment plants—from inlet and aeration processes to outlet—and offers both indoor and outdoor solutions.
Like the PMC system, the PMC-R system uses a ceramic filter. However, the PMC-R system is equipped with an automatic, programmable backflush function using permeate.
Our backflush filter is specifically developed to clean the ceramic membrane by flushing it with liquid in the opposite direction of suction. In the PMC-R system, this is done using permeate. This process removes accumulated dirt particles or filter cake and ensures consistent filtration performance.
The ceramic membranes used in both the PMC and PMC-R systems offer maximum mechanical and chemical stability with minimal flow resistance. They consist of a macroporous α-Al2O3 support material onto which multiple layers of highly porous ceramic are applied. The separation limit of the finest-pored layer in our systems is 0.45 μm.
The quality and quantity of the permeate recovered during the backflushing process determine whether further cleaning or replacement of the ceramic membrane is necessary. In the case of persistent contamination, laboratory-based chemical cleaning or membrane replacement may be required.
Ceramic elements are used worldwide in various filtration systems and offer advantages such as long service life, wear resistance, and temperature stability. They are resistant to acids, alkalis, and solvents, and can be regenerated and backflushed.
Especially in the filtration of challenging liquids like wastewater, the degree of contamination affects the filter’s lifespan and efficiency. Backflushable filters are recommended for extended service life and improved performance. Backflush media may vary and often include compressed air, chemicals, or the filtrate itself.
For indoor applications, the PMC-R system allows operation of the ceramic membrane in a tank-based setup. The wastewater continuously flows around the ceramic disc(s), while the permeate is extracted—enabling constant and efficient filtration with a long operating life.
A practical quick-release mechanism simplifies maintenance and replacement of the filter discs. For outdoor use, optionally heated cabinets and filtrate lines are available to ensure optimal operating conditions even under adverse weather conditions.
