Filtration is a mechanical separation process used to remove solid particles, macromolecules, microorganisms, or viruses from liquids using a filter medium. This method retains unwanted components while allowing the liquid to pass through the filter medium.
In filtration systems based on membrane technology, the filtered liquid is referred to as filtrate or permeate. The pressure drop occurring during filtration, which represents the filter resistance, is a key characteristic. In membrane technology, the retained phase is called retentate, while the phase that passes through the membrane is referred to as filtrate or permeate.
The liquid to be separated is pumped through a membrane made of materials such as polymer, metal, or ceramic. Each of these materials provides resistance to the particles in the mixture.
During filtration, the retained particles form either a layer (filter cake) on the membrane surface or accumulate within the membrane pores. A thick filter cake increases flow resistance and can slow down or even halt the filtration process. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly remove the filter cake or deposits, for example, by backwashing with permeate, compressed air, chemicals, or manual cleaning with a brush.
