Ceramic Filter

Glossary der ETL Verfahrenstechnik GmbH

Ceramic filters are specially manufactured membranes made from inorganic materials. They are used for the selective separation of substances in various media and can remove or reduce particles, turbidity, microorganisms, or unwanted dissolved substances in water.

Ceramic filters are often made from metal oxides such as aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide, or zirconium dioxide. Depending on their structure, ceramic filters may be dense—for gas separation applications like oxygen isolation from air—or porous for gas diffusion as well as micro- and nanofiltration. The porous variants may consist of either amorphous or crystalline materials.

Compared to polymer membranes commonly used in industry, ceramic membranes stand out for their resistance to extreme conditions, including:

  • Aggressive chemicals
  • Organic solvents
  • Extreme pH levels
  • High pressures and temperatures

These properties make ceramic filters a versatile and robust solution for various industrial applications.

Technology and Application Areas of Ceramic Filters

Ceramic filter elements enable efficient filtration, characterized by high mechanical and chemical stability as well as low flow resistance. These membranes are based on a pure α-Al2O3 support material with a macroporous structure, complemented by one or more layers of highly porous ceramic with precisely defined structures. The fine-pored layer determines the specific filtration properties.

The advantages of ceramic filter elements include:

  • Resistance to acids, alkalis, and solvents
  • Regenerability and backwashability
  • Durability and wear resistance
  • Reliability and heat resistance (steam-sterilizable)

Common ceramic filtration processes include:

  • Microfiltration (MF)
  • Ultrafiltration (UF)

Micro- and ultrafiltration filters act as mechanical barriers with precisely defined pore sizes. These separation layers are applied to a support material such as polymers or ceramics. Ceramic filters are often used in water treatment, frequently in combination with traditional methods.

Micro- and Ultrafiltration

The pore diameter is crucial for the filter type and affects the separation performance: substances smaller than the pores pass through the filter, while larger particles are retained.

Filter / Membrane Structure

The functional filtration layer is extremely thin and located on the side facing the raw water. The majority of the filter consists of a stable support material that ensures mechanical strength. For efficient operation, it is essential that the pores become larger toward the clean water side to prevent long-term clogging.

Materials

Common filter membranes are made of plastics (such as polyethersulfone, PVDF) or ceramics (such as aluminum oxide, silicon carbide). Although ceramic filters are more expensive to manufacture than their polymer counterparts, they offer better chemical resistance and higher permeability.

Summary:

Ceramic filters are specialized filter elements made from inorganic materials, used in a wide range of filtration processes. Compared to conventional polymer membranes, they are distinguished by their resistance to chemicals, high-temperature stability, and greater permeability. Most ceramic filters are made from metal oxides such as aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide, or zirconium dioxide, although materials like silicon carbide may also be used. Depending on the application, these filters can be designed as either dense membranes for gas separation processes or porous structures for applications such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, or nanofiltration.

A key advantage of ceramic membranes is their ability to be used under extreme conditions, including high pressures, high temperatures, or in aggressive chemical environments.
