Ceramic Membrane
Glossary of ETL Verfahrenstechnik GmbH
A ceramic membrane is a specialized membrane made from inorganic, non-metallic materials. These membranes are commonly composed of metal oxides such as aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide, or zirconium dioxide.
Compared to polymer membranes, which are widely used in industry, ceramic membranes offer superior resistance to extreme conditions, such as:
- Aggressive chemicals, organic solvents, and extreme pH values
- High pressures and temperatures
Technology and Application Areas of Ceramic Membranes
Ceramic membrane elements enable dynamic filtration characterized by maximum mechanical and chemical stability and minimal flow resistance. These membranes are based on a support structure with a macroporous composition. A membrane layer with precisely defined structures is applied on top. The fine-pored layer determines the specific filtration properties or separation limits.
The advantages of ceramic membrane elements include:
- Resistance to acids, alkalis, and solvents
- Regenerability and backwashability
- Durability and wear resistance
- Reliability and heat resistance (steam sterilizable)
Microfiltration and Ultrafiltration
The pore size determines the type of membrane and influences the separation rate: substances smaller than the pores pass through, while larger particles are retained.
Membrane Structure
The functional membrane layer is extremely thin and located on the side facing the raw water. For efficient performance, it is important that the pore size increases toward the clean water side to prevent long-term clogging.
Summary
Ceramic membranes are specialized filter elements made from inorganic, non-metallic materials used in a variety of filtration processes. Compared to conventional polymer membranes, they are especially resistant to chemicals and temperature. Most ceramic membranes are composed of metal oxides such as aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide, or zirconium dioxide, though other materials like silicon carbide may also be used.
A key advantage of ceramic membranes is their ability to function under extreme conditions, such as high pressures, high temperatures, or in aggressive chemical environments.
