Online Measurement Technology for Monitoring Water Resources
Monitoring global water resources is among the most pressing challenges of our time. Laws therefore require continuous improvements in drinking water quality and reductions in permissible pollutant levels in wastewater.
Online analyzers play a crucial role in this development, especially in wastewater treatment plants. Additionally, they are applied in the monitoring of drinking water, wastewater, surface water, and process water.

Online Analyzers in Aeration Tanks
In aeration tanks, filtered samples (permeates of specified quality) are continuously analyzed online for their nitrogen and phosphorus content. These measurements serve as critical control variables. If a measured value exceeds the predetermined internal limits, such as for nitrate nitrogen, the recirculation pumps are automatically set to maximum capacity. This means that these pumps forcefully return the wastewater-sludge mixture to the start of the aeration process, where longer retention times reduce the values through denitrification or nitrification processes.
Sample filtration to produce high-quality permeate is carried out continuously for the online analysis measurement system. The permeate is then directed through a specialized outlet to the respective online analyzers or measurement systems.
The online analyzer continuously measures the permeate stream from the sample filtration process. The measurement interval is adjustable and typically set to about 10 minutes.
It is essential that the established threshold values align with those of the wastewater treatment plant’s outflow before the treated wastewater is discharged back into the water cycle to prevent exceedances. For this purpose, outflow monitoring stations, also equipped with online analyzers, are available. Here, samples (ultrafiltrated permeates) are tested for quality in a similar manner as in the aeration tanks before they enter the discharge stream.
